At Lotus Drum, our goal is to bring happiness and tranquility to the world through our unique and innovative products.
In 2017, our founder Gabby Kelly came across a unique style of drum at a local market in Byron Bay, Australia.
Fascinated by the calming tones of the drum, Gabby was infatuated and wanted to purchase one for her two young children.
But, there was one small problem. One single drum cost nearly $400 😱 Completely out of her budget.
After speaking with the stall owner, Gabby worked out that her husband Sam might be able to make one at home using the tools he owns for his car repair business.
Two months later (after a slow and tedious process), the first prototype of the Lotus Drum was born!
As you can tell, it wasn't the most pretty looking drum. However, the sounds it produced were nothing short of magical!
Gabby's children loved it And so did their friends and kids. It wasn't long before her friends were asking if her husband Sam could make one for them too.
Unfortunately, Sam simply didn't have the time to make more. Each drum requires a tedious process of grinding, cutting, polishing and tuning before it is ready. There is no shortcut to the process.
However, Gabby's friends were persistent. As the months went by, they would continue to ask her if Sam could make one for them.
That is when the idea came to her...
"There must be a way to make these more affordably" - Gabby thought.
After contacting drum makers in India, Indonesia, and other parts of Asia, Gabby found a group who was willing to make her a sample drum, and if she liked it they could make more.
Gabby made the sample order (petrified her credit card would be hacked by oversees merchants) - But it was a risk she was willing to take.
After 4 long weeks, the drum had arrived...It was incredible!
Painted in a beautiful coat of red acrylic paint, it produced that same beautiful sound (and had the looks to match).
The next day, Gabby showed the drum to all of her friends. Like Gabby, they were amazed, and all wanted to order one.
Gabby knew she was on to something. If all of her friends so desperately wanted one - there must be others who would also want one.
She emailed the supplier to order 5 more, eager to get her small business off the ground.
Weeks passed....Gabby was becoming inpatient.
Finally, they wrote back to her, and were happy to make more drums.
But, there was a catch...
They had a minimum order quantity of 500 drums.
Gabby was in disbelief, 500 drums would be most of her savings. But she knew she couldn't pass up on the opportunity, and was passionate about the Lotus Drum that she had discovered.
After weeks of persuading Sam that it was a great idea, he agreed. And Gabby placed the order.
The rest is history...
